A while ago, with cash flow tight, I researched a serious question: is there a job that pays a monthly salary like a proper job, but leaves most of your time free to openly work on your own code?
The answer is yes — and there are far more of them than I expected. I call them “paid-to-chill jobs.” I spent a week combing through Hangzhou (focused on Qiantang/Xiasha/Xiaoshan/Binjiang) and built a quick-reference table of 102 jobs across 12 categories. This post is the distilled essence.
First, be clear about what you’re buying
The essence of a paid-to-chill job is trading low-skill hours for money, and keeping your high-skill hours for yourself. In the vibe-coding era, the math has completely changed — slacking off at work used to mean scrolling your phone; now, a laptop plus Claude Code turns a night-shift security booth into your second office.
So the metric that matters isn’t the salary. It’s this formula:
Real hourly value = (monthly salary + value created during idle time) ÷ total time invested
Example: a night fire-control post pays 5,500 CNY/month, 8 hours per night, 5 of which you can spend coding. If your side projects bring in 3,000/month, the post’s real monthly value is 8,500. Compare that to a 9,000 day job that consumes all 8 hours and leaves you too tired to touch a keyboard at home — the first option wins.
So the priority order is: idleness > laptop allowed > night-shift rate > stability > commute > salary. Salary comes last.

My hard gate: ≤ 6 hours of mandatory work per day
I applied one filter to every job: mandatory work time (time you can’t code) must be ≤ 6 hours per day. Of the 102 jobs, 96 pass; 6 fail (hotel night front desk at 7h, B&B night manager at 7h, in-station night delivery at 7h, English after-sales support at 6.5h, etc.). Failures are marked ✗ in the tables.
One more finding: remote freelance gigs (crowdsourced annotation, AI training) have 0 mandatory hours — nobody forces you to clock in. They pass the gate, but income depends entirely on hustle. Good as a supplement, not as a main line.
The verdict: three types of “human ATM machines”
- Night security / fire-control rooms — the highest idleness category, typically 0.7-0.9. The bank night guard post was field-marked at a perfect 1.0: the guard room has a fixed desk, chair and power outlet, the monitors mostly watch themselves, and from 3-5 AM you can nap or code at will.
- Convenience store / front-desk night shifts — solo staffing after 21:00, idleness 0.6-0.75, fast onboarding, fast cash.
- Venue / data-center duty — substations, IDCs, solar/storage plants: night shift means watching dashboards, idleness 0.65-0.8, and the pay is a notch higher.
My Top 10 (ranked by my own profile)
Ranking logic: idleness × night-shift fit × availability in Hangzhou × my personal thresholds (sports-education master’s, night owl, can code) × urgency of cash flow.
| # | Job | Why it made the list | Idleness | Pay (CNY/mo) | Start |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bank night guard | Guard room = slacker paradise: desk, outlet, can nap after 3 AM, monitors mostly watch themselves; field-tested 1.0 | 1.0 | 4500-5500 | 1-3 days |
| 2 | Office/residential night guard | Instant onboarding, everywhere in Hangzhou, low-frequency patrols, QR-code check-ins | 0.8-0.9 | 4500-6500 | 1-2 days |
| 3 | Fire-control room operator | The most legit “sitting job”; certificate holders are scarce — get a security cert first as a bridge | 0.7 | 5500-6500 | Cert needed |
| 4 | Convenience store night (Lawson/FamilyMart) | Solo 21:00-9:00 shift, fast cash | 0.6-0.75 | 6000-8000 | 1 week |
| 5 | Metro station attendant (night) | SOE benefits (social insurance + meal subsidy), always hiring on official site, station WiFi + booth outlets | 0.8 | 6000-6800 | Fast |
| 6 | Sports venue manager | Master’s degree is a bonus; institutional staffing; solo nights | 0.75 | 3000-4000 | 1-2 weeks |
| 7 | Swimming pool lifeguard (night) | Sports background + lifeguard cert; quiet nights | 0.6 | 3500-5500 | 2-4 weeks |
| 8 | Data-center duty electrician | Most technical; IDCs cluster in Yuhang/Fuyang; 3-shift rotation | 0.65 | 6000-8000 | 1 month |
| 9 | Billiard hall night cashier | Small shop, loose rules, empty after midnight | 0.75 | 5000-8000 | 1-2 weeks |
| 10 | Taobao Flash crowdsourced courier | Flexible supplement; phone usable between orders; no contract | 0.65 | 4000-10000 | Instant |
Three-step plan for this week: ① Bank night guard / residential night guard (onboard in 1-2 days, cash flow first) → ② Get security cert + sign up for lifeguard cert → ③ Keep the guaranteed post while interviewing for fire-control (certificate bumps pay a tier) and venue jobs (degree advantage).
The full 102-job quick-reference table (12 categories)
Three notes first:
- The raw research covered 112 posts; after removing cross-batch duplicates, 102 remain. ✅ = ≤6h mandatory work, ✗ = over the gate.
- Idleness is a subjective 0-1 score: 1.0 = almost nothing happens all night; 0.3 = you’re watching something constantly.
- Salaries are Hangzhou ranges as of August 2026, from job boards and practitioner accounts — verify at interview. The same job can differ hugely between employers: one “metro station night guard” measured 7h/day (✗), another 4.5h (✅). Hence the must-ask interview question: “Which hours of the night shift are actually busy?”

How to choose: scorecard + 6 must-ask interview questions
Run yourself through this scorecard before any interview, in descending weight:
| Dimension | How to judge |
|---|---|
| Idleness (heaviest) | Ask directly: “Which hours of the night shift are busy? What can I do when it’s quiet?” Small employers will openly say “you can read / sleep” |
| Laptop allowed? | Outlet, WiFi/signal, a desk surface for a laptop? Can a phone hotspot carry you? |
| Surveillance / patrol intensity | Patrol check-in every how many hours? Is a camera pointed at your seat? How often does the boss inspect? |
| Solo post or with colleagues | Solo is best for slacking, but solo night posts carry safety responsibility; on two-person posts, stay on good terms with your partner |
| Stakes | Fire control / gas stations / pump stations: incidents are big deals, choose carefully; security/front desk/convenience stores: low odds |
| Commute | A 1-hour commute = 2 hours thrown away daily. Don’t underestimate it |
| Stability | Labor contract vs. service agreement? Holiday scheduling? Day/night rotation frequency? |
Must-ask interview questions (quote them verbatim):
- “Which hours of the night shift are busy? Is 2-5 AM basically dead?”
- “Can I bring a laptop? I’d like to study during quiet hours.” — Most small employers: yes. Big-company outsourced posts: no.
- “How often are patrol check-ins? Phone check-in or QR scan?”
- “How many days off per month? How are holidays handled? What’s the overtime rate?”
- “How is the contract signed? Social insurance? Probation period?”
- “Any training fee / deposit / clothing fee?” — If yes, walk away.
Traps to avoid (this part matters)
Trap 1: Any job that charges you is a scam. Deposits, “guarantee fees,” clothing fees, training fees, certification fees, “onboarding fees” — legitimate employers never charge these. Security/delivery/logistics/gas stations are the hardest-hit areas; “high pay, 500+ daily settlement” ads are 90% traps.
Trap 2: Fraud-adjacent “high-pay” gigs — don’t touch them. “Watch your phone 2 hours a day, earn 20k/month,” “rent out your WeChat/bank card,” “help transfer some money” — these aren’t side income, they’re criminal aiding-and-abetting territory (aiding and abetting crime under Chinese law). That’s prison, not a fine. No matter how tight cash is, not one cent from these.
Trap 3: Verbal promises vs. contracts. “Raise after probation,” “social insurance later” — only trust what’s written in the contract. Verbal promises are air.
Trap 4: Unpaid overtime and “no holidays off.” Statutory holiday work at 300% pay is backed by the Labor Law. Put it in the contract; don’t be shy.
Trap 5: Platform taxes on delivery/designated driving. Gig income is “service remuneration” — above 60k/year you must self-declare income tax, with 20%+ withholding. Designated-driving car rental runs 3000-4000/month; calculate net income carefully.
Trap 6: Day/night rotation burns your body. Rotating 12-hour shifts are worse than permanent nights. Night owls should pick pure night shifts (e.g. 22:00-6:00) — what you really want to avoid is frequent day/night flipping.
Trap 7: Social insurance gaps. If you have a company or a main career, figure out how social insurance connects before onboarding — don’t break your coverage for a stopgap job.
The differentiation lever: don’t let your credentials sleep
97% of “chill job” competitors are ordinary manual workers — a race not worth entering. But if you have any professional background, find chill jobs adjacent to your field, and your pay tier, social standing, and conversion prospects all jump a level. My own case: with a sports-education master’s, the lifeguard / venue manager / campus venue duty track is one where the degree is hard currency — most competitors for those posts don’t have it.
The goal isn’t to be a security guard; it’s to be “a credentialed venue technical post.” If you’re going to slack, slack with dignity.

This week: ① Search BOSS Zhipin / 58.com for “night shift security / fire control / convenience store night / venue duty,” apply to 5-10; ② Visit 2-3 in person with the 6 must-ask questions; ③ Get the security cert on the “Zheliban” app (free; medical + diploma); ④ Decide on the lifeguard cert; ⑤ Trial-shift 1-2 nights and measure: how many hours of real coding did the night actually yield?
This month: ① Lock in one main fallback post, sign the contract, confirm social insurance; ② Bookkeep the job income and project income separately; ③ Review after three months: did the “slacking output” hit expectations? If not, switch posts.
One honest word at the end
“Paid to chill” is a gray zone, not a right. The idleness an employer tacitly allows can be tightened at any time. So:
- Don’t take the idleness for granted — do your actual work well, and the boss won’t bother watching you;
- Never use the work computer/network for your projects — total isolation;
- Phone hotspot + silent keyboard + screen angle — the fundamentals of the craft;
- If caught, be gracious: “I’ve finished my work; I’m studying tech in the downtime.” Most employers will look the other way.
Treat the chill job as “an ATM that pays your dream a salary,” and it’s just a tool. The main line is forever: use those hours to build your projects. This research exists to help you pick the handiest ATM.
